ETRO LOUNGE'S ORANGIE

By W. Healy

Published on October 21, 2008 at 1:33pm

It had already been a long day when we rolled into Etro Lounge (1424-A Westheimer at Windsor; 713-529-3449) on a recent Saturday night. Most of my days don't involve drinking at 10 a.m., but this was Texas/OU weekend and you can't drink all day if you don't start when you wake up. You may have seen me mention male pattern drunkenness in this space before — well, Saturday was more like chronic alopecia. The bar had an interesting crowd and vibe. There were people in suits and tuxes who had come from a wedding or funeral (I get those two confused sometimes). By the time we bellied up to the bar, I was working on my fourth or fifth sheet (to the wind). José and Vic were in tow and feeling similarly awesome, so it was time to properly celebrate the Longhorn victory. "Do you have any special drinks or shots?" I slurred. "My specialty is a shot called the Orangie," was the reply from our lovely tattooed bartender. "No shit." It was more a comment than a question. The bachelorette party we ran into was impressed with our witty repartee. Or they threatened to tell on us.  Did I mention that we had been drinking for 14 hours? I did, to the girls, with mixed results. And by "mixed" I mean they resembled the Hindenburg disaster. Oh well, the good guys won this year and that's worth at least ten post-game crash-n-burns. And the Orangies were delicious.

1 1/4 oz. Svedka Clementine Flavored Vodka

1/4 oz. Watermelon Pucker Liqueur

Splash of orange juice

Splash of Red Bull

Directions: Shake vodka, liqueur and OJ with ice; strain into shot glass; top with Red Bull; get hooked.
